SAN LUIS HILLS WILDERNESS STUDY AREA

Values

The San Luis Hills WSA is a series of hills which rise abruptly above the broad San Luis Valley. Cliffs occur in the northern portion of the otherwise rounded hills topography and numerous small drainages and the larger John James Gulch provide topographic relief. Distant views of the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan Mountains create a wonderful feeling of vastness. The arid climate results in low-growing desert shrubs and grasses, pinyon and juniper. Fauna is also sparse due to lack of water, but includes mule deer, antelope, various raptors, and various songbirds. Activities include hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, and photography.
