Volunteers needed for National Public Lands Day event at Grimes Point on September 28

CARSON CITY, Nev. - The Bureau of Land Management, Carson City District, will host a National Public Lands Day (NPLD) event on Saturday, September 28, 2019.
At this event, volunteers will participate in painting of facilities, fence repair, and a cleanup at the Grimes Point Archaeological Area approximately 10 miles east of Fallon, Nevada. Lunch will be provided along with NPLD t-shirts.
About Grimes Point: Grimes Point is an archaeological site which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. During the Pleistocene Epoch, this area and most of northwestern Nevada, was covered by ancient Lake Lahontan. Over the last 10,000 years, the level of ancient Lake Lahontan fluctuated widely, at times drying up completely. When above water, the Grimes Point area would have been marshland with a wide variety of wetland plants and animals available for use by prehistoric populations. Grimes Point was first visited by Native Americans perhaps 8,000 years ago or more.

Time: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Grimes Point Archaeological Area approximately 10 miles east of Fallon, Nevada
Directions: Drive east of Fallon on Highway 50 approximately 10 miles. All will meet in the Grimes Point parking area off of Highway 50.
Volunteers need to bring sun protection, appropriate footwear (ankle-high boots recommended) and plenty of water. Trash bags, tools, gloves and water will be provided.
Volunteers under the age of 18 must complete a volunteer service agreement prior to the event and present a photo I.D. upon arrival. Guardians must sign boxes 32 and 34 and return to mhornsby@blm.gov.

This is one of the many events that will be held around the country as part of the 26th annual NPLD. NPLD is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the public lands we all enjoy.
