Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument announces winter visitor center schedule

MORENO VALLEY, Calif. - As the Coachella Valley begins to move into the winter months, the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center will initiate its winter visitor center schedule.
From Oct. 1 to April 30, 2018, the visitor center will be open five days a week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday to Monday, and close on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Here is a small list of some of the activities happening at the Santa Rosa & San Jacinto National Monument for October 2017:
Carrizo Canyon Opening Day: On Oct. 1, the Carrizo Canyon Ecological Preserve opens for the season. Friends of the Desert Mountains will take participants on a docent led hike into a canyon that provides a chance to see Bighorn Sheep and other desert critters, and learn about the geology of the area. Hike rating is easy to moderate, approximately 2-3 miles round trip. Elevation gain approximately 100 to 500 feet. Bring snacks and 2 liters of water per person. Bird Walk: On Oct. 9, join Friends of the Desert Mountains on a bird walk from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Santa Rosa & San Jacinto National Monument. Participants will walk on the paved Ed Hastey Garden Walk and Randall Henderson Wash Loop Trail with an experienced birder to discover the year round and migratory birds that call the Coachella Valley Desert home. Monument Night Adventure: On Oct. 14, discover the desert after dark! Participants will take a short walk along the Art Smith Trail looking for the nocturnal creatures that inhabit the desert.
