CARSON CITY, Nev. – On March 17, crews will begin road repairs and other maintenance at Sand Mountain Recreation Area, located 28 miles east of Fallon, Nevada.
Work will include repairing low water crossings in the main road, installing a helipad and repaving the road. The helipad will help shorten transportation times to hospitals for accident victims in medical emergencies. The paving will begin in May 2025 and the main access road will be temporarily closed. A temporary access road will be made available from the main entrance during the paving.
“This work is needed in order to maintain this highly used recreation area,” said Kathryn Dyer, Acting Sierra Front Field Manager. “It should not affect access to the area, but we want visitors to be aware of what the construction workers are doing there.”
Each year, Sand Mountain averages 50,000 to 70,000 visitors riding all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles, sand rails, dune buggies and side-by-sides. This maintenance work will be completed through a contractor to meet the needs of public safety at one of the most popular off-highway vehicle recreation areas in Nevada and Northern California.
