BLM and Friends of Black Rock-High Rock select artists for 2019 Artist-in-Residence

Gerlach, Nev. -- The Winnemucca District, Bureau of Land Management, along with partner organization Friends of Black Rock-High Rock have selected Mary Kenny and Jack Hulbert to complete two week residencies for the 2019 Artist-in-Residence (AiR) program celebrating the Black Rock Desert High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area (NCA). The artists will complete their residencies in June.
Mary Kenny’s work originates from travel in and around desolate landscapes across the West. Through the use of collage she brings together these elements to create new and changing landscapes that embody ideas of that “somewhere else.” She has participated in numerous shows nationally and regionally and her prints are in many collections. She is an associate professor at Sierra Nevada College teaching a variety of courses within two-dimensional practices.
Jack Hulbert is a visual artist based in Portland, Oregon. His photographic body of work is based on his extensive travels across the west coast of the US and abroad, focusing on what he calls “the intersection of isolation and disconcertment.” His latest work explores these core themes in the hamlets of Nevada and how they are influenced by the state's infinite landscapes.
The AiR program promotes awareness through art of the exceptional places protected within the BLM’s National Conservation Lands. The program provides an opportunity for learning and dialogue about the value of preserving public lands. It will engage and inform an audience through public programs by participants, and will provide time for artists to pursue their work.
