Information Bulletin: No. NV-2015-003

To: All Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Employees, Nevada
From: Deputy State Director, Resources, Lands, and Planning
Subject: Statewide BLM Nevada 150 Geocaching Activity

The purpose of this Information Bulletin is to introduce the BLM Nevada geocaching activity which is part of our Nevada 150th Anniversary Celebration. The intention of this activity is to engage the public in a fun adventure that celebrates some of the great recreation and cultural opportunities that Nevada offers. This is an Official Nevada 150 event.

Date: Starting at the end of October 2014 with no end date. Additional caches may be added in the future.

Target audience: Families, youth, geocachers, and other local residents and visitors looking for a fun outdoor activity.

The six sites are: The California Trail Interpretive Center, Elko District; Water Canyon, Winnemucca District; Grimes Point, Carson City District; Mt. Wilson Backcountry Byway, near Parsnip Peak Wilderness Area boundary, Ely District; Hidden Valley Trailhead, near Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, Southern Nevada District; Rhyolite Historic Townsite, Battle Mountain District.

Interested participants will be directed to www.blm.gov/nv/st/en/prog/recreation/Geocaching.html to obtain additional information on how the activity works. They will also have to go to www.geocaching.com to obtain a free membership which gives them access to each site's geocache information. Each participant or family can download an electronic copy of the BLM Nevada Passport and obtain electronic stamps for each of the participating geocaches they visit. Once they obtain all six stamps they can mail the completed passport to:

BLM Nevada 150 Geocaching Team
BLM Nevada State Office
1340 Financial Blvd
Reno, NV 89502

If someone drops off a completed passport, please mail it via interoffice mail to the BLM Nevada State Office Geocaching Team.

The first ten participants that submit a completed passport can mail them to NSO for an award. The Nevada 150 Commission has generously donated 10 commemorative copper medallions to help us kick off this activity (only one passport per household will qualify for the medallion). There is also a small "first to find" prize in each cache for the first geocacher to access each cache.

These geocache locations correspond to the sites in the BLM Nevada Jr. Explorer Adventure Book but this geocaching activity is not directly related to the Junior Explorer program.

If anyone has any questions please contact John Callan via email at jcallan@blm.gov or Barb Keleher at bkeleher@blm.gov.
