Information Bulletin No. 2016-017

To:                  All Field Office Officials

                      Attn:  Recreation Planners

From:              Assistant Director, Resources and Planning

Subject:          Bureau of Land Management Fee-Free Days for the 2016 Season

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), in conjunction with other agencies within the Department of the Interior, will waive recreation-related fees for visitors on January 18, 2016 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), February 13-15, 2016 (President’s Day weekend), September 24, 2016 (National Public Lands Day), and November 11, 2016 (Veterans Day).

The “fee-free” requirement only applies to standard amenity fees, though other fees may be waived if the field office manager deems it appropriate.  For data collection and accountability purposes, a zero-value receipt equivalent to a one-day pass may be issued to those visitors whose fee is waived.

While other federal land management agencies may observe “fee-free” days other than the dates outlined by the BLM, the BLM field units/fee sites in jointly managed areas, near, or adjacent to other federal units are encouraged to offer similar fee free access as appropriate.  In general, these “fee-free” days waive standard amenity fees and individual day-use fees (such as visitor centers and within National Landscape Conservation System units); however, other fees, i.e. those for group day use, overnight camping, cabin rentals and use of special areas, will remain in effect.

For more information about this season’s fee-free days, please visit the BLM Fee-Free Days website.  If you have questions concerning this Information Bulletin, please contact Peggi Brooks, BLM Recreation Fee and Permit Program Manager, Recreation and Visitor Services Division (WO-250), at 202-912-7254 or pbrooks@blm.gov.
