Information Bulletin No. 2014-052

To:                   All Washington Office and Field Office Officials

From:               Assistant Director, National Landscape Conservation System and Community Partnerships

Subject:           BLM’s 2014 “Making a Difference” National Volunteer Award Winners

We are pleased to announce the selection of six individuals, one couple, and two groups to receive the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM’s) 2014 “Making a Difference” National Volunteer Awards for outstanding volunteer service or Volunteer Program leadership on the public lands.  New this year, we are recognizing youth (age 25 and under) volunteers separately, with the Outstanding Youth award; we have selected one individual and one group to receive that award.

The awardees and their BLM nominating offices are:

  • Mark Kreider, Alaska, Outstanding Youth;  Anchorage District Office
  • Jupiter Environmental Research and Field Studies Academy, Florida, Outstanding Youth (group award);  Southeastern States Field Office (MS)
  • Stan Shaw, Arizona, Outstanding Achievement;  Yuma Field Office
  • Jack Hailman, Florida, Outstanding Achievement;  Southeastern States Field Office
  • Verna Pratt, Alaska, Lifetime Achievement;  Campbell Creek Science Center
  • Mark Hesse, Utah, Lifetime Achievement;  Monticello Field Office
  • Floyd and Opal Jensen, Oregon, Lifetime Achievement;  Salem District Office
  • Friends of Pompeys Pillar, Montana, Lifetime Achievement (group award);  Pompeys Pillar National Monument
  • Rob Sweeten, Utah Historic Trails Lead, Employee Award;  Utah State Office

A national panel of BLM specialists and partner representatives selected the nine award winners from submissions by BLM State Offices.  The winners were selected for their exceptional contributions to conservation and management of the public lands.  We thank all of the offices that submitted nominations; as in the past, there were many great candidates deserving of recognition.  For your information, we have attached summaries of our winners’ accomplishments.

The winning volunteers and BLM employee winner will be honored during a special awards ceremony on May 29, 2014, to be held live via video teleconference.
Should you have questions about this year’s volunteer awards, please contact Mary Tisdale, Chief, Division of Education, Interpretation & Partnerships, at (202) 912-7450 or MTisdale@blm.gov.   Thank you for your continued support of and enthusiasm for the BLM Volunteer Program.
