A dedicated member of BLM California law enforcement, Ranger Cristobal Perez was recently named the 2024 California Ranger of the Year during a surprise ceremony at King of the Hammers.  This prestigious recognition highlights Ranger Perez’ unwavering commitment to excellence, selfless dedication, and remarkable contributions to safeguarding public lands over the past year.

“Ranger Perez embodies what the BLM needs today in law enforcement,” said BLM California State Director Joe Stout. “His commitment to service, courage to protect, and the level of care he brings to work daily reflect true leadership and dedication.”

Among his many achievements, Ranger Perez particularly distinguished himself through his heroic efforts resulting in saving an infant’s life Taking swift action upon observing a small child being held outside the window of a vehicle speeding on Interstate 15, Ranger Perez’ timely coordination resulted in the responsible agency arriving on the scene, several charges filed against the responsible parties, and no injuries to the child.

He was named the lead investigator in a case concerning crimes against the government in which two BLM off-highway vehicles were stolen from his duty station; the Barstow Field Office.  His efforts included working closely with the Assistant United States Attorney for the Central District of California, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office Auto Theft Division, and several others, resulting in the recovery of the stolen property and charges filed against the offending parties.

He is known by his peers for his ability to foster and build relationships with other federal, state, local agencies, and Tribal governments resulting in the promotion of public safety and the protection of public lands and resources.

“I did not do this alone,” Ranger Perez said. It is due to the combined efforts of the team that I am standing here today receiving this award.”

The BLM California Law Enforcement Leadership Team developed the “Ranger of the Year Award” to recognize its law enforcement rangers who serve the largest law enforcement program in the Bureau.  The “Desert Ranger Force’ of the BLM California Desert District has its roots in the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976, which authorized its establishment and conveyance of law enforcement authority to carry out the BLM’s mission. We are proud to have Ranger Perez representing BLM law enforcement!
