Volunteering their time, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) staff members brought big smiles to children this holiday season.

The BLM Arizona Colorado River District Office, along with the Kingman Field Office, Lake Havasu Field Office, Yuma Field Office, and BLM California Needles Field Office, conducted their annual employee-driven toy giveaway event at the La Posa South Long Term Visitor Area (LTVA), located near Quartzsite, Arizona.

This is a festive event that the BLM staff eagerly looks forward to each year. With the spirit of giving during the holiday season, BLM employees donate toys purchased with their personal funds and then volunteer to host the holiday event at the site.

Although Santa and Mrs. Claus are busy before Christmas Day, they came down south and visited the kids and BLM staff for the day. More than 50 kids received gifts donated by the BLM staff, and they also enjoyed hot chocolate, candy canes and a photo opportunity with Santa and Mrs. Claus (portrayed by Public Affairs Specialist Jason VanBuskirk and Administrative Officer Shanin VanBuskirk).

The BLM’s law enforcement staff who participated also provided excitement to the event as they distributed gifts. Rangers visited with the public, and let a few of the children into their vehicle to briefly operate the lights and sirens.

The parents expressed their appreciation to the BLM staff for bringing joy and ensuring the children received Christmas gifts.  A camp host also expressed how much this event means to him, and he looks forward to helping next year.

“One of the most memorable experiences was witnessing the pure excitement on the faces of families and children as they picked out their presents. It was heartwarming to see core holiday memories being created, filled with joy and anticipation,” Lake Havasu Field Office Park Ranger Jessica Smith said. Many of those BLM staff and volunteers share this sentiment, demonstrated by their enthusiastic participation.

As the holiday season draws near, events like the annual toy giveaway remind us of the impact we can have on our communities. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the BLM employee volunteers who made this day memorable for so many families.

Events like this strengthen the bond within our local communities through kind, compassionate service to the public. The BLM Colorado River District keeps that spirit alive throughout the year by fostering connections and creating lasting memories that make a positive difference.
