This week's General Land Office Record of the Week focuses on Magdalena Stock Driveway, New Mexico! New Mexico was admitted to the United States as the 47th state in 1912. It is the 5th largest state in size, falling between Arizona (6th), and Montana (4th). Though the state is large, the population is rather small. Approximately 2,100,000 call it home, an estimated 17 people per square mile. New Mexico ranks 36th in population by state. To get cattle and sheep from the ranches to your plate in the late 1800s, stockmen had to drive them cross country to the shipping pens in the town of Magdalena. In some instances, this was from ranch pastures up to 125 miles away! Read more on ArcGIS Story Maps.
