PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – With the Independence Day holiday approaching, public land users are reminded that Stage II fire restrictions are still in effect throughout the California Desert District. Stage II restrictions prohibit setting, building, maintaining, attending, or using open fire of any kind and smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or camp trailer unless prohibited by State or local laws. Controlled flame devices such as portable stoves and lanterns with shut-off valves are allowed with a valid California Campfire Permit.

ARCATA, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management is issuing fire restrictions for public lands managed by the Arcata Field Office in Del Norte, Humboldt, Trinity, and Mendocino counties beginning Wednesday, July 3. These seasonal fire restrictions listed in the fire order will be in place to help prevent wildfire and will remain in effect until further notice. These restrictions are in addition to the BLM year-round statewide fire prevention order also in effect until further notice.

Initial investment aim to reduce wildfire impacts in communities near public lands

BISHOP, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management is issuing fire restrictions for all public lands managed by the Bishop Field Office effective Monday, July 1, due to dry conditions and wildland fire danger. These seasonal restrictions are in addition to the year-round statewide fire prevention order. This seasonal fire order will remain in effect until further notice.

The Bureau of Land Management is acquiring more than 1,500 acres of land near Lake Clementine to enhance recreation opportunities, improve habitat conservation, and expand public access in the area.

NAPA, Calif. – Wild horses and burros from the herd management areas of northeast California will be looking for new homes when the Bureau of Land Management offers them for adoption Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23, at the Napa Valley Horsemen’s Association Arena, 1200 Foster Road, in Napa. The BLM will offer eight mares and geldings aged 4 to 5, and 10 yearling fillies and geldings. A total of 14 burros of all ages, including yearlings, will also be available.

NEEDLES, Calif. – Due to extreme temperatures and insufficient water availability, the Bureau of Land Management began an emergency gather of wild burros on Friday, May 31, using a temporary water and bait trap method in the Piute Mountain Herd Area in San Bernardino County.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Due to dry conditions and high fire danger, the Bureau of Land Management will temporarily close public lands in and near Whitewater Canyon in Riverside County. The public safety closure, in coordination with Riverside County, will begin on Saturday, June 1 and will remain in place until October 31.

ARCATA, Calif. – Opportunities to revel in the beauty of ancient redwood stands await outdoor enthusiasts who reserve space on a free guided hike offered by the Bureau of Land Management along the Salmon Pass Trail at the southern end of the Headwaters Forest Reserve near Fortuna. Hikes are planned for weekend dates into November. Hikers can expect to cover three miles in the outings that last three to four hours. The trek is moderately strenuous, with 360 feet of elevation change. Registration is required for each outing. Registration is now open for weekend hikes through July. Registration links will open for each scheduled hike two months in advance and close three days prior to each hike. The hikes are among many events scheduled to celebrate 25 years since establishment of the Headwaters Forest Reserve. The 7,472-acre Headwaters Forest Reserve was established in 1999 after a decade-long grassroots effort to protect the world’s last unprotected, intact, old-growth redwood forest ecosystem. It supports threatened species including coho salmon, the northern spotted owl and the marbled murrelet, a seabird. The BLM Arcata Field Office manages the Reserve in consultation with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. To reach the Elk River Trailhead, take the Elk River Road exit off Highway 101 at the south end of Eureka. Turn right onto Elk River Road and drive approximately six miles to the parking area.
