Event Description
CASPER, Wyo. – Enjoy the benefits of outdoor play and learning in the snow with your family at Winter Adventure Day on Casper Mountain. This free, family-friendly event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 6 at the Casper Mountain Biathlon Center at McMurry Mountain Park.
The Bureau of Land Management, in partnership with the Casper Mountain Biathlon Club and local and regional partners, are offering winter activities geared for all ages.
Join biathlon skiers as well as educators from the BLM, Boy Scouts, Casper Nordic Club, Central Wyoming Trails Alliance, National Ski Patrol, Nicolaysen Art Museum, and the Science Zone in this outdoor family adventure. New events will be available this year from the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Natrona County Search and Rescue.
“Observation and exploration are key to understanding how our environment adapts to winter,” says BLM interpreter Jason Vlcan, who also leads the animal adaptation station. “Our place-based learning stations will inspire family learning about our local environment.”
Learning stations are diverse and cover topics ranging from winter safety to winter art. Younger children can dig in the snow to mimic animal caching while the older kids learn the art of winter camping. Natrona County Search and Rescue will offer rides in their Hagglund, a tracked vehicle used in winter rescue operations. Participants also have the options of cross-country skiing, sledding, snow shoeing, shooting, and fat-biking.
“I often hear from parents that they want to play in the snow with their kids, but don’t know how to ski or snowshoe and worry about the difficulty,” says BLM education technician Stacey Moore. “We want everyone to feel included, so we’re providing equipment, lessons, and activities for all ages. Having the event in April also often allows for some beautiful weather to play in the snow!”
Participation is free, but equipment and lessons are limited to a first come, first served basis. Pre-registration is required to reserve equipment and lessons in advance.
