Sept. 27-28: BLM plans National Public Lands Day events in Carlsbad

CARLSBAD, N.M. — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Carlsbad Field Office is celebrating the 31st annual National Public Lands Day by inviting volunteers to participate in two trash cleanup events. The first is from 7 to 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at the Avalon Dam and Reservoir. The second is from 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at 6 Mile Dam. Participants will receive breakfast, T-shirts, water and cleanup supplies.

“Many Bureau of Land Management sites along the Pecos River provide access to recreation opportunities such as canoeing, swimming and fishing,” said Outdoor Recreation Planner Ashley Shreves. “Trash pollution is a serious threat to river ecosystems. Trash in our waterways transports chemical pollutants, threatens aquatic life, and interferes with human enjoyment of the river. During National Public Lands Day, you can help to protect the Pecos, the ecosystems it contains, and the recreation it provides by volunteering in our river cleanup events.”

National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest, single-day, volunteer event for public lands. Established in 1994 and held annually on the fourth Saturday in September, events bring thousands of volunteers to help restore and improve public lands around the country. Officially, the day is Sept. 28 this year.
