Pony Express annual re-ride gallops into Casper Friday

CASPER, Wyo. – Visit the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center this Friday, June 21, and help us cheer on the National Pony Express Association as the annual re-ride comes to town. Riders are anticipated to arrive at the Trails Center around 1 p.m.

Please note, riders may arrive earlier or later than the estimated 1 p.m. Once arrived at the Trails Center, riders will relay the mochila – a leather saddle bag containing mail in locked pouches – to fresh horses and riders. Watch closely, as the relay only takes a few minutes before the next rider takes off West!

This annual living history event spans all 1,966 miles of the actual Pony Express National Historic Trail route. More than seven hundred volunteer riders from the Association will relay commemorative mail on horseback over the full distance in ten-days’ time.

Using more than eight hundred horses, and riding day and night regardless of the weather, the riders can be tracked along their way at the National Pony Express Association’s website at www.nationalponyexpress.org. This year, the mail will be carried from east to west, departing St. Joseph, Mo., on June 17 and arriving in Sacramento, Calif., on June 27.

The National Pony Express Association is a non-profit organization incorporated in 1978 and dedicated to the preservation and marking of the Pony Express National Historic Trail. The Pony Express trail is one of four national historic trails commemorated through hands-on exhibits, multi-media programs, and interactive interpretation at the Trails Center.
