Dillon BLM to conduct prescribed burn in Madison County
DILLON, Mont.— The Bureau of Land Management’s Dillon Field Office will do some prescribed burning this spring east of Sheridan Mountain between California Creek and Mill Creek in Madison County.
Smoke may be visible to the public from Highways 41 and 287, and the communities of Dillon, Alder, Sheridan, and Twin Bridges.
The prescribed burns—totaling 1,500 acres—could start as early as April 8 for areas near Bivens Creek Ridge Road, California Creek Road and Mill Gulch Road. The exact timing depends on weather and fuel conditions. Crews will work where slashing of juniper took place in 2022 on private and BLM lands.
The primary objectives of the planned burn treatments are to reduce fuel loading and conifer expansion into sagebrush grasslands.
The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska, on behalf of the American people. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation.
