BLM opens new Fox Run Trail in Anchorage’s Campbell Tract Special Recreation Management Area
– The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) opened a new multi-use trail this month on the Campbell Tract Special Recreation Management Area in Anchorage, Alaska. The new, approximately 1.5-mile Fox Run Trail expands the network of trails in the 730-acre Campbell Tract to better serve the approximately 500,000 visitors that enjoy these public lands annually.
The BLM began work on the Fox Run Trail in 2020 based on community input during the development of the Campbell Tract Recreation Area Management Plan (CT RAMP). During that process, a member of the public suggested building a new route to reduce congestion on other trails, provide a unique winter loop option by tying into the winter single track trails, and reduce user conflicts in the winter months on the adjacent sled dog only trails.
Trail construction began in the fall of 2023 and was completed this year thanks to hard work of BLM staff and many partners. The trail is complete, but like all trails it will require annual maintenance on the trail tread and drainage. The Fox Run Trail was made possible thanks to the efforts of multiple BLM offices and countless others of which the State of Alaska, trail crews and volunteers were just a few.
“I am extremely proud of the BLM staff and our partners who have worked so hard to make the Fox Run Trail a reality,” said Stolf Short, Outdoor Recreation Planner. “This addition brings a unique year-round trail experience to the incredible recreation opportunities found on Campbell Tract and adds to the impressive trail network offered in the Anchorage Bowl. I can’t wait to get out and enjoy it with my family!”
The BLM’s Campbell Tract is a 730-acre Special Recreation Management Area located in the heart of Anchorage, Alaska’s largest urban area, and provides year-round outdoor recreation opportunities at the most visited BLM recreation site in Alaska. Campbell Tract’s 24-mile trail system winds through the woods, providing recreation opportunities on unpaved trails that link to the adjacent Far North Bicentennial Park trail network. Campbell Tract also offers wildlife viewing opportunities to visitors, who have the chance to encounter moose, lynx, fox, black and brown bears, coyotes, migratory birds, and three species of Pacific Salmon while visiting these public lands.
