BOISE, Idaho–The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will host a virtual informational meeting about geothermal leasing on BLM-managed public lands in southern Idaho via Zoom on Thursday, April 17, 2025, from 6-7 p.m. MT. The meeting will explain how geothermal energy works, what development looks like, geothermal potential locations, the federal leasing process, environmental reviews, public participation, stipulations or protections, benefits for Idaho taxpayers, and the financial boost for local economies.

The combined bonus bids, rentals, and subsequent royalties from the leases will be distributed between the U.S. Treasury (25%), the counties where the leases are located (25%), and the State of Idaho (50%). The State of Idaho then allocates 90% of that portion into the state renewable energy resources fund and 10% to the counties where the leases are located for construction and maintenance of public roads and support of public schools.

Public lands parcels in jurisdiction of the Bruneau, Burley, Four Rivers, Pocatello, and Shoshone field offices have been nominated for geothermal leasing. BLM Idaho is preparing for two competitive geothermal lease sales this year. This meeting is the public’s opportunity to understand the process, provide feedback, and be heard. Registration is required at https://ow.ly/2Wwa50VuWg9. Registrants will receive a link to participate in the virtual meeting. Please contact BLM Deputy State Director for Communications Serena Baker at sbaker@blm.gov for reasonable accommodations to participate.

Geothermal lease sales support domestic energy production and American energy independence, while contributing to the nation’s economic and military security. Consistent with Executive Order 14154, “Unleashing American Energy,” the BLM's lease sales help meet the energy needs of U.S. citizens and solidify the nation as a global energy leader long into the future.

Leasing is the first step in the process to develop federal geothermal resources. The BLM ensures geothermal development meets the requirements set forth by the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 and other applicable legal authorities. The BLM’s lease sales are held online through EnergyNet.

Geothermal energy is a renewable resource that generates baseload electricity with minimal carbon emissions. It is an abundant resource, especially in the West, where the BLM has authority to manage geothermal resource leasing, exploration, and development on approximately 245 million surface acres of public lands and the 700 million acres where the United States owns the subsurface mineral estate. Please visit the Idaho Geothermal Energy website for updates.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska, on behalf of the American people. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. Our mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of America’s public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
