BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev. – Weather permitting, the Bureau of Land Management’s Battle Mountain District Office (BMDO) is planning to conduct prescribed burning activities from November 18 to November 22, 2024, at the Locke’s Pond Unit of the Railroad Valley Wildlife Management Area. Burning will be intermittent and will not occur on every day throughout the burn window. The BMDO anticipates needing one to two days of favorable weather to burn approximately 160 acres.  The burn window notice is intended to give the BMDO flexibility in scheduling the prescribed fire to take advantage of favorable weather conditions.

The prescribed fire area is 20 miles southwest of Currant, Nevada. The objective is to burn the existing heavy riparian vegetation to maintain the wildlife habitat of the ponds.

The prescribed burn is highly dependent on weather conditions and fuel parameters. The burn may be postponed until a window of acceptable prescriptive conditions opens. Smoke may be visible in Currant along Highway 6. Signs will be posted along Hwy. 6 on days that burning activities will take place.
