Three Peaks Recreation Area
Located just ten miles northwest of Cedar City, Three Peaks Recreation Area hosts a range of recreation opportunities appealing to both residents and visitors alike. Upon completion of a comprehensive recreation management plan in 2006, 6,000 acres were designated as a Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA) by the Cedar City Field Office. SRMAs are BLM administrative units where the existing or proposed recreation opportunities and recreation setting characteristics are recognized for their unique value, importance, and/or distinctiveness; especially compared to other areas used for recreation.
The SRMA Management Plan galvanized existing recreational use and provided a planning framework for future recreation development throughout Three Peaks. What previously existed as an open space playground has since been developed to meet the needs of almost any outdoor enthusiast. Currently, the area is managed primarily by the BLM Cedar City Field Office in collaboration with Iron County. The BLM’s Rocky Peak Campground provides 12 reservable campsites, including two large group sites. The Mountain Bike Trailhead provides access to more than 30 miles of non-motorized trails. Additional BLM recreation amenities include the Model Port, Rocky Peak Trailhead, Equestrian Trailhead, RC Track, OHV Trailhead, Disc Golf, and Paintball Complex.
Iron County currently holds a Recreation and Public Purpose (R&PP) lease for a portion of the recreation area that includes the Iron County Shooting Range, Ironside Disc Golf Course and reservable Three Peaks Campground.
The Recreation Area plays host to a variety of organized events each year including Utah National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) races, competitive rock crawling, and disc golf tournaments.
