Accessibility Description (ABA/ADA)
The main parking lot is northwest of the building. There are2designated accessible spaces about 500 feet from the main entrance to the Center, with a paved pathway providing a direct routeto the front door. This pathway and others around the building sometimes become icy during the winter and may present challenges for wheelchair users and other visitors.
A bench without arms provides a rest spot between the main parking lot and the entrance, though the bench sometimes gets covered by snow in the winter months. On the south and west sides of the building are 2 other accessible spaces, with a less direct route to the building’s main entrance.
Cell phone reception at the site can be good or spotty, depending on your carrier.
Three unshaded kiosks sit between the main parking lot and the building. One displays wildlife safety information, at a height appropriate for visitors using wheelchairs or other mobility devices. The other kiosks display flyers and brochures that may be too small to read easily from a seated position. However, the flyers and brochures are also available inside the Center.
Inside the building are 2 accessible flush toilets and an accessible drinking fountain and bottle-filling station.
The indoor exhibits consist of muralson the wall about the ecology of the region and artifacts, including local wildlife specimens, on horizontal surfaces. These exhibits might be difficult to access for visitors in wheelchairs. The porch on the north end of the building has a model beaver lodge that children can crawl through.
There are 5 picnic tables outside for outdoor programs, one of which is accessible, with a cut-out area on one side for wheelchair users. Eating is not allowed outside because of bears.
Paved pathways provide access to the outdoor amphitheater, where some program activities take place.
The Center offers programming for both children and adults, and all programs are adaptable for people with special needs. Teachers, parents, and organizers can notify staff in advance if they have accessibility concerns.
The trails near the Center, beyond the paved pathways around the building, have a wood-chip surface and are not accessible for typical wheelchairs. A 3-wheeled all-terrain wheelchair designed for children can be borrowed for use while attending a program or event.
There are hardened trails in the nearby Campbell Tract Special Recreation Management Area, with accessible parking available.
