AMERICAN FLATS WILDERNESS STUDY AREA

 

Values

The American Flats WSA is adjacent to the Uncompahgre Wilderness (managed by the BLM). A high-elevation expanse of rolling, grassy tundra, it is centered on Sunshine Mountain (13,321 feet), and includes the headwaters of North Fork Hensen Creek. Vegetation consists mainly of alpine grasses, sedges, and forbs, and spruce and fir at lower elevations. Fauna includes Rocky Mountain elk and Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. Expansive alpine meadows and steep mountain summits support outstanding opportunities for solitude and challenge. Activities include hiking, backpacking, mountain climbing, hunting, and photography.

Visitation Information

The American Flats WSA is located in Hinsdale and Ouray Counties, approximately five miles east of Ouray and 11 miles west of Lake City. Access to the WSA is via a trail on National Forest lands in North Fork Hensen Creek.
