NORTH ESCALANTE CANYONS WILDERNESS STUDY AREA

Values

Majestic scenery and a tangled topography dominated by cliffs, canyons, alcoves, domes and vistas of the Navajo, Kayenta and Wingate Formations characterize this WSA. Sinuous, steep walled canyons such as Phipps Canyon, Boulder Creek, the Gulch and the Escalante River separate the broad, sandy and slick rock mesas and plateaus. With landforms so diverse, opportunities are limited only by one’s level of experience and imagination. The lives of early hunters, gatherers and farmers, are recorded in various forms of rock writing (petroglyphs & pictographs), granaries and middens, which are distributed through the WSA.
