Values

The Wales Creek WSA is an area of heavily forested ridges and canyons. The mixed conifer forest includes stands of lodgepole pine, Douglas fir, spruce, larch, and sub-alpine fir. Chamberlain Mountain is the high point and two streams run to the east from the WSA; Wales Creek and Yourname Creek. The forest provides habitat for lynx, moose, elk, deer, beaver, black bear, and mountain lion. Cutthroat trout inhabit Wales Creek. Opportunities for solitude are very high.  Recreation uses are primarily backcountry hunting.

Visitation

Wales Creek WSA is located in Powell County approximately 40 miles east of Missoula, Montana. From Montana Highway 200 take the Sunset Hill Road at Greenough. Continue on that road until it intersects with the Elk Creek Road and turn right. Drive the Elk Creek Road for about 3 miles, then turn left onto the Cap Wallace Road. Drive that road for about 7 ½ miles to BLM road 0403. Take the right fork onto 0403 and drive for about 2 ¾ miles and turn right on BLM Road 0402. At about 1 ½ miles, the WSA is on the right side of the road.

Visitor Advisory

There are no trails in the WSA. With an abundance of logs on the forest floor, hiking cross country is difficult and slow. The thick forest further makes navigation challenging. Hiking in this WSA is for the most experienced.
