BLM issues proposed management updates in northwest California
REDDING, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management today announced the proposed Northwest California Integrated Resource Management Plan and Final Environmental Impact Statement, updating management for public lands in BLM’s Arcata and Redding field offices. If finalized, the plan will guide management of approximately 382,200 acres of BLM-managed public land and approximately 295,100 acres of subsurface minerals in Butte, Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama, and Trinity counties for the next 15 to 20 years.
BLM acquires lands to improve conservation and recreation opportunities
The Bureau of Land Management is acquiring more than 1,500 acres of land near Lake Clementine to enhance recreation opportunities, improve habitat conservation, and expand public access in the area.
BLM Mother Lode and Ukiah field offices issue seasonal fire restrictions

BLM to offer wild horses, burros for adoption in Napa
NAPA, Calif. – Wild horses and burros from the herd management areas of northeast California will be looking for new homes when the Bureau of Land Management offers them for adoption Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23, at the Napa Valley Horsemen’s Association Arena, 1200 Foster Road, in Napa. The BLM will offer eight mares and geldings aged 4 to 5, and 10 yearling fillies and geldings. A total of 14 burros of all ages, including yearlings, will also be available.
BLM begins emergency gather to save wild burros in the Piute Mountain Herd Area
NEEDLES, Calif. – Due to extreme temperatures and insufficient water availability, the Bureau of Land Management began an emergency gather of wild burros on Friday, May 31, using a temporary water and bait trap method in the Piute Mountain Herd Area in San Bernardino County.
BLM, Wintun Nations to co-manage Molok Luyuk in Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument
UKIAH, Calif. – Today, the Bureau of Land Management, the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation and the Kletsel Dehe Wintun Nation signed a co-stewardship agreement to strengthen cooperation in managing Molok Luyuk – roughly 20,000 acres of Wintun Nation ancestral lands located in Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument.
BLM initiates Whitewater Canyon closure due to increased wildfire risk beginning June 1
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Due to dry conditions and high fire danger, the Bureau of Land Management will temporarily close public lands in and near Whitewater Canyon in Riverside County. The public safety closure, in coordination with Riverside County, will begin on Saturday, June 1 and will remain in place until October 31.
BLM offers guided hikes, by reservation, on Headwaters Salmon Pass Trail
ARCATA, Calif. – Opportunities to revel in the beauty of ancient redwood stands await outdoor enthusiasts who reserve space on a free guided hike offered by the Bureau of Land Management along the Salmon Pass Trail at the southern end of the Headwaters Forest Reserve near Fortuna. Hikes are planned for weekend dates into November.
Hikers can expect to cover three miles in the outings that last three to four hours. The trek is moderately strenuous, with 360 feet of elevation change.
Registration is required for each outing. Registration is now open for weekend hikes through July. Registration links will open for each scheduled hike two months in advance and close three days prior to each hike.
The hikes are among many events scheduled to celebrate 25 years since establishment of the Headwaters Forest Reserve.
The 7,472-acre Headwaters Forest Reserve was established in 1999 after a decade-long grassroots effort to protect the world’s last unprotected, intact, old-growth redwood forest ecosystem. It supports threatened species including coho salmon, the northern spotted owl and the marbled murrelet, a seabird.
The BLM Arcata Field Office manages the Reserve in consultation with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. To reach the Elk River Trailhead, take the Elk River Road exit off Highway 101 at the south end of Eureka. Turn right onto Elk River Road and drive approximately six miles to the parking area.
BLM Resource Advisory Council meets June 5-6 in Arcata
ARCATA, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management Northern California District Resource Advisory Council will consider a wide range of natural resources topics, when it meets for a field tour and business meeting, Wednesday and Thursday, June 5-6, at the BLM Arcata Field Office, 1695 Heindon Road, in Arcata.
Inyo National Forest, BLM seek input on proposed removal of wild horses outside Montgomery Pass Wild Horse Territory
Inyo National Forest, in coordination with the Bureau of Land Management, is seeking public comment on a preliminary Environmental Assessment to consider removal of wild horses outside of the Montgomery Pass Wild Horse Territory in Mono County. The comment period opens today and is expected to close June 26, 2024.
Bizz Johnson Trail shuttle service begins June 1, National Trails Day
Summer bus shuttle service on the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail begins Saturday, June 1, in conjunction with National Trails Day, and will continue every Saturday through the summer and early fall.

MARINA, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management is issuing seasonal fire restrictions for public lands managed by the Central Coast Field Office effective Monday, May 20, due to dry conditions and wildland fire danger. These seasonal restrictions are in addition to the year-round statewide fire prevention order, and the permanent fire restrictions in place at the Fort Ord National Monument and Cotoni-Coast Dairies. This seasonal fire order will remain in effect until further notice.

Eric Hollenbeck, a nationally renowned woodworking craftsman and lifelong resident of the California North Coast, will be the featured presenter in a storytelling event set for Wednesday, July 17, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Headwaters Education Center within the Headwaters Forest Reserve.
BLM initiates seasonal fire and target shooting restrictions in California Desert District
The Bureau of Land Management has elevated its seasonal fire restrictions effective May 22 for public lands managed by the BLM California Desert District within Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, Imperial, southern Inyo, eastern Mono, San Diego, and eastern Kern counties. These restrictions will remain in effect until October 24 unless terminated sooner if conditions warrant.
BLM to improve services in King Range National Conservation Area and Redding Field Office recreation sites
The Bureau of Land Management is implementing new fees for recreation sites in the King Range National Conservation Area on the North Coast, and for the Steiner Flat and Ohl Olsen campgrounds managed by the Redding Field Office, to improve access to public lands, enhance public health and safety, and better protect natural resources.

Sheep to arrive at Cronan & Magnolia Ranch to graze on invasive plants and reduce wildfire threat
EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. – A flock of nearly 900 sheep will arrive in early May at the Bureau of Land Management’s Cronan Ranch, and a flock of nearly 600 sheep will arrive in mid-May at Magnolia Ranch, to graze invasive weeds and reduce wildfire threat. Sheep herders will manage the flocks, moving them across the grassy slopes and meadows with assistance from herding dogs and livestock protection dogs. The sheep will be grazing behind temporary fencing to allow the sheep herder to keep the sheep in an area long enough to have the vegetation uniformly grazed and/or trampled down.
BLM opening Trinity River campgrounds May 3
REDDING, Calif. – With summer camping season just around the corner, the Bureau of Land Management is announcing that Trinity River campgrounds along State Route 299 will open Friday, May 3. These campgrounds are first-come, first-served. There are no reservations.
BLM welcomes the public to celebrate Point Arena-Stornetta’s 10-year anniversary
The Bureau of Land Management would like to invite the public to “Celebrate the Coast,” from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Sat. May 18, at Point Arena. This event marks the 10-year anniversary of the inclusion of the Point Arena-Stornetta Unit to the California Coastal National Monument. The event is free to the public and activities will be happening along the coastal trail between City Hall and the Lighthouse. Mendocino College Field Station, found along the trail, will be offering an open house.
