CASPER, Wyo. – The BLM, in partnership with the Casper Mountain Biathlon Club and local and regional participants, invites the public to attend Winter Adventure Day 2021. The event will be held on Saturday, April 17, from 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Casper Mountain Outdoor Center at McMurry Mountain Park.
Place-based learning stations, modified to be COVID-safe, will inspire family members of all ages to learn about our local environment. Participants will join educators from the BLM, biathlon skiers, Boy Scouts, Central Wyoming Trails Alliance, National Ski Patrol, Nicolaysen Art Museum and the Science Zone in this outdoor family adventure.
“Observation and exploration are key to understanding how our environment adapts to winter,” says BLM Visitor Information Specialist Jason Vlcan, who is heading up an exploratory nature trail. “Learning stations will be diverse and cover topics ranging from winter safety to winter art. Little ones can come dig in the snow mimicking animal caching while older ones can learn the art of building an emergency shelter.”
Families can play together in the snow with the options of cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, shooting and testing fat tire bikes. Additionally, participating families can also enter a drawing for a prize.
“Parents often tell me they want to go play in the snow with their kids, but since they don’t know how to ski or snowshoe, they worry about the difficulty,” said BLM Education Technician Stacey Moore. “We’ve created a safe environment for families to come try these winter sports and create lasting family memories. We want all families to feel included so we’re providing equipment, lessons and activities for all ages.”
Participation is free, but equipment and lessons are limited to a first come basis. Pre-registration is required to reserve equipment times and lessons. Event participants must follow current COVID-19 guidelines set by the event organizers.
