LANDER, Wyo. – The Wind River Wild Horse Eco-Sanctuary, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management and Wyoming Honor Farm, will host a free public day and wild horse adoption on June 9, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The eco-sanctuary and the Honor Farm share the BLM’s commitment to place excess wild horses and burros into private care in order to maintain healthy animals on sustainable, working rangelands.
The Wind River Wild Horse Eco-Sanctuary, seven miles north of Lander, provides a natural and free-roaming environment for excess wild horses removed from public rangelands, as part of an agreement between the BLM and the Double D Ranch.
This event will feature free wagon tours every half hour to view the 138 wild horses; a demonstration on halter training, first saddle and first ride; and youth activities. Local food will be available for purchase.
The Wyoming Honor Farm will showcase four halter-trained yearling wild horses that will be available for adoption. Silent bids may be made throughout the event, with bidding closing at 3 p.m.
Wild horse eco-sanctuaries help the BLM care for excess wild horses that have been removed from overpopulated herds roaming Western public rangelands. They provide opportunities for people to learn more about the complexities of the wild horse and burro program, and to experience a piece of our shared American heritage.
The Wind River Wild Horse Eco-Sanctuary is located at 8616 U.S. Hwy. 287. It offers tours to see the horses and other educational opportunities from May through September each year. For more information about the event, contact the eco-sanctuary at 307-438-3838 or www.windriverwildhorses.com.
