LANDER, Wyo. – The Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Wyoming Honor Farm, will host a wild horse and burro adoption, traditional haying demonstration and wagon tours to see the wild horses on Saturday, July 29.
The Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary, seven miles north of Lander, is a partnership between the BLM and the Double D Ranch to provide a natural and free-roaming environment for excess wild horses removed from public rangelands.
This event will feature teamster Jack Malmberg and his team of working draft horses as they cut and rake hay on the 900-acre ranch at the foot of the Wind River Mountains.
The Wyoming Honor Farm will showcase two gentled wild burros and one gentled wild horse that will be available for adoption. Silent bids may be made throughout the event, with bidding closing at 2 p.m.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to view Wind River’s wild horses while taking a wagon ride at a standard rate. Displays that interpret Native American culture and the historic role of horses are featured in the eco-sanctuary’s free visitor center. Lunch will also be available for purchase.

Wild horse eco-sanctuaries help the BLM care for excess wild horses that have been removed from overpopulated herds roaming Western public rangelands. They provide opportunities for people to learn more about the complexities of the wild horse and burro program, and to experience a piece of our shared American heritage.
The Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary offers tours to see the horses and other educational opportunities from May through September each year. Reservations are recommended. For more information about the event, contact Wind River at 307-438-3838 or www.windriverwildhorses.com.
