LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Bureau of Land Management Las Cruces District is seeking volunteers for its upcoming National Public Lands Day event on Sept. 21, from 8 a.m. to noon.  In recognition of this annual observance, the BLM will be accomplishing on-the-ground projects to enhance the Aguirre Spring Recreation Area and Campground.

In concert with other events in the country, the BLM is encouraging the public to get outdoors and “roll up their sleeves” to make a difference for public land resources they use and value.  Following are the directions and specifics for the event and how the public can get involved.  In recognition of National Public Lands Day, site-specific standard amenity and day-use fees at BLM recreation sites and areas will be waived. Other fees, such as overnight camping, cabin rentals, group day use, and use of special areas, will remain in effect.

Aguirre Springs Recreation Area and Campground is located 14 miles east of the Interstate 25 and U.S. 70 interchange in Las Cruces, or 1.1 miles east of San Augustine Pass.  Once within the Recreation Area, volunteers will meet BLM staff at the Baylor Pass Trailhead (East).  BLM staff and volunteers will tackle a variety of projects, including trash pick-up, picnic table and ramada repairs and painting, as well as maintenance of Pine Tree Loop.

To get additional information on this event, the public can contact the BLM Las Cruces District Park Ranger Daniella Barraza at 575-525-4487 or dbarraza@blm.gov.
