Volunteers needed for National Public Lands Day events

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.– The Bureau of Land Management Grand Junction Field Office invites volunteers to celebrate the 25th annual National Public Lands Day this year with a variety of volunteer opportunities.
National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer event for public lands. Join hundreds of thousands of people at sites throughout the country to spend the day connecting with your local public lands and inspire stewardship.
“The Grand Junction Field Office is lucky to have such a vast network of partners in the Grand Valley. We will be completing some much-needed work through all of our National Public Lands Day events this year,” said Katie Stevens, BLM Grand Junction Field Manager.
The following volunteer opportunities are open to all ages. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
- September 8, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.— BLM staff and volunteers will clean up the rifle and pistol ranges on 27 ¼ Road with the opportunity to sight-in afterwards. For public safety, the shooting ranges on 27 ¼ Road will be closed from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on while the event is in progress.
- National Public Lands Day, September 22 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.— trail work day on Rustler’s and Mary’s Loops in McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area with the BLM and Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Association (COPMOBA)
- October 6, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.— trail work day on the Butterknife Trail with the BLM and the Motorcycle Trail Riding Association (MTRA).
- October 13, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.— the BLM and Mesa Monument Striders will hold a trail work day at the Palisade Rim Trail and staff from Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics will be on hand for trail users and volunteers to learn how to recreate with minimal impact on public lands.
- October 13 and 14 — Colorado Canyons Association (CCA) and the BLM will hold an overnight river clean-up on the Gunnison River through Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area. There are a limited number of volunteer spots available, so please contact CCA to reserve your spot at (970)-263-7902.
Volunteers assisting with field-based events should come prepared with gloves, snacks, water bottles, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and sturdy closed-toe shoes/boots. Long sleeves and pants are recommended and tools will be provided. Volunteers will need to provide their own travel to and from the events.
