MONTROSE, Colo. - The Bureau of Land Management Uncompahgre Field office invites volunteers to celebrate National Public Lands Day on Sept. 16 by helping to maintain routes within the Dry Creek area near Montrose, Colorado, and Sept. 30 to help construct a route to connect the Burn Canyon trailhead to the Burn Canyon trail system near Norwood, Colorado.

On Sept. 16, interested participants should meet at the Rimrocker Trailhead off of State Highway 90 road at 8 a.m. to carpool to the project site where BLM staff, Uncompahgre Off-Highway Vehicle Trail Crew and Colorado Statewide Off-Highway Vehicle Crew will work alongside volunteers to improve the Olathe Reservoir road entrance.  The Statewide and the Uncompahgre off-highway vehicle crews are funded through the Colorado Parks and Wildlife OHV grant program which is funded by OHV registration dollars.

On Sept. 30, BLM staff, Colorado Mountain Club and volunteers will construct a section of single track trail for non-motorized users (mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding) to get from the trailhead/parking area to the designated non-motorized trail system. Volunteers will meet at the Burn Canyon Trailhead to begin the project at 9 a.m.

“Our communities benefit from these projects each year by improving recreational access and opportunities.  We especially appreciate having the Colorado Statewide OHV crew and Colorado Mountain Club here to assist with these projects this year,” said Edd Franz, BLM Acting Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area Manager.

National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer event for public lands. These local events are part of efforts across the nation to steward and promote public lands by bringing together hundreds of thousands of individual and organizational volunteers to help restore America’s public lands.

Volunteers need to come prepared with gloves, water bottles, a hat and boots. Tools, snacks and drinks are provided.  For more information, contact Julie Jackson, Outdoor Recreation Planner at 970-240-5310.
