The Fremont County ATV Association, Rim Rock Riders 4-H Club and Bureau of Land Management Lander Field Office will hold their annual cleanup of public lands at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, in the Government Draw area east of Lander.
Volunteers should bring snacks and gloves if available. Water will be provided.
To reach the cleanup site, turn east from Lyons Valley Road onto Coal Mine Road, cross the Little Popo Agie River and continue on Coal Mine Road to the staging area adjacent to the cattle guard.
Government Draw is enjoyed by many for activities including target shooting and motorcycle and ATV riding. Unfortunately, cartridges and targets are often left behind and the area is used by some as an illegal dumping ground.
Illegal dumping is a long-standing problem on public lands with dump sites often promoting even more dumping in the same area. Illegal dumps can pose a threat to humans, pets, wildlife and vehicles. Accumulating trash and illegal dumpsites on public lands have required additional time and money spent on clean up, remediation and enforcement rather than higher priority projects.
When shooting on public lands, please remove your cartridges and targets. If you suspect violations of land use regulations, including illegal dumping, do not risk escalating the situation by personally contacting the violator. A safer way to resolve the situation is to write down the license plate information if possible and contact appropriate law enforcement. You may also call 1-888-358-2310. The BLM offers a $250 reward for information leading to the conviction of any person damaging your public lands in the state of Wyoming.
For more information about the cleanup, please contact Mary Longtine at 307-840-6757 or Ron Cunningham at 307-330-8667.
