Boise, Idaho – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will begin Remedial Investigation field activities on November 4, 2019 at the former Boise Army Barracks, a Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) located near Boise. These activities will be conducted on public lands in the Boise Foothills managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Preliminary field activities will be finished in approximately one week, but will resume in the spring of 2020.  This investigation is routine work and is part of a larger nationwide USACE effort to investigate possible environmental contamination at FUDS sites.

The field activities may involve surveying with a metal detector or other specialized instruments, investigating individual subsurface items, or collecting soil and/or water samples. Public access will be temporarily restricted in portions of the Boise Barracks to allow for completion of the work. No trail closures are anticipated during the fall 2019 field activities.

"These investigation surveys are precautionary yet we are entirely prepared to address any findings that may be discovered,” said USACE project manager Adrian Goettemoeller.

Documents related to the site history are available for review in the government documents section of the Boise Public Library in Boise.  For more information about the investigation at Formerly Used Defense Sites and the former Boise Army Barracks, contact the USACE Public Affairs Office, Kansas City District, at 816-389-3486.
