MONTE VISTA, COLO - The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) San Luis Valley Field Office has lifted fire restrictions. “Recent rains have improved fuel moisture and reduced the risk of wildfire ignition and spread, allowing fire restrictions to be rescinded,” said San Luis Valley Field Manager Melissa Garcia. “Although seasonal restrictions are no longer in effect, visitors should always be cautious when using fire.”
There are year-round wildfire prevention restrictions that always apply on BLM-administered public lands in Colorado. The following are prohibited:
- Leaving a fire unattended or unextinguished.
- Possession, discharge, or use of any fireworks.
- Discharge of a firearm using incendiary or tracer ammunition.
- Burning, igniting, or causing to burn any tire, wire, magnesium, or any other hazardous or explosive material. Operation of any off-road vehicle on public lands without a properly installed spark arrester pursuant to 43 CFR 8343.1 (c).
A fire is “out” when it is cold. Keep water and a shovel handy for extinguishing your fire when you are ready to leave it. Stir water into hot coals until they are cold to the touch.
