Fort Stanton, N.M. – From Sept. 13-17, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Roswell Field Office will host the Back Country Horsemen of New Mexico’s Annual Ride Meeting and trail ride out of the Rob Jagger’s Campground near Fort Stanton, N.M. The ride will be based out of the campground, with members coming in from all over the state to use the campground and ride the trail systems across BLM lands. The Back Country Horsemen of New Mexico has obtained a special recreation permit from the BLM for the event.
The public can expect to see more campers, trailers, tents and horses within the campground than usual, as well as vehicle and equestrian traffic on the surrounding roads and trails throughout the duration of the ride. The BLM will monitor the event and post signs where necessary to advise the public.
The BLM would like to remind the public that the campground is occupied on a first-come, first-served basis. During this event, the BLM recommends other camping areas within the Fort Stanton-Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area. These include the Cave Canyon Campground and other dispersed camping opportunities. Additionally, the Valley of Fires Recreation Area, the Carrizozo Land Access Area on the west side of the Valley of Fires, and the Three Rivers Petroglyph Site Campground will be open for recreational use. For more information about these and other BLM recreation areas, please visit www.blm.gov/visit.
