LAS CRUCES, N.M. – On May 4, the Bureau of Land Management and the Friends of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks will host an all-day BioBlitz at the Dripping Springs Natural Area (Natural Area).  Activities will be conducted from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Using a phone app called iNaturalist, BioBlitz participants will help the BLM and Friends record their observations on a variety of species that inhabit the Natural Area. The BioBlitz is a perfect opportunity for families to get outdoors and enjoy nature in all its glory.  Everyone is invited to join the fun for as much time as their schedules allow.

The schedule includes: Bird Banding (7 a.m.); Bird Observations (8:30 a.m.); Butterfly Observations (10 a.m.); Reptiles & Amphibians Observations (11 a.m.); Poetry & Prose Reading (noon); Plant Observations (6 p.m.); and Bat Observations (7:30 p.m.).  There will be prizes for the most observations made.

Employing citizen science will help the BLM manage the area for those species and their habitats.

Participants for these events are asked to dress appropriately and to remember their outdoor essentials – water, snacks, appropriate footwear, hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.  For information on the activities, the public can contact Daniella Barazza at 575-525-4487 or message the BLM Las Cruces District on Facebook.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska, on behalf of the American people.
