Central Ore. – If conditions remain favorable, fuels specialists with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Prineville District Office will continue with their winter prescribed burning program tomorrow, 12 miles south of Prineville.

On Wednesday, March 8, fuels specialists are planning to burn 35 acres of juniper slash south of the Upper Davis Loop Road and north of the Prineville Reservoir. The goal of this project is to burn piles of previously cut young juniper to help restore the traditional shrub steppe habitat and reduce hazardous fuels. If conditions are favorable for burning, ignitions will take 1-2 days to complete.

No road closures or delays are expected; however, the smoke from this project may be visible to vehicles driving through the area. If smoke drifts onto roadways, drivers are encouraged to turn on their lights and proceed slowly through the area.

Prescribed burning is highly dependent on favorable temperature, moisture and wind conditions. This burn will be started when the conditions are right to meet the objectives of the burn and while minimizing smoke impacts to any nearby communities. All burn areas are patrolled during and following ignitions.

All prescribed burns are completed in cooperation with the Oregon Department of Forestry smoke management plan. For more information about prescribed burning, please contact the Prineville BLM at (541) 416-6700.
