CHALLIS, ID— The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Challis Field Office (CFO) initiated a fuels reduction project the week of June 6, to thin timber 100 feet on either side of Morgan Creek Road. Thinning dense timber along the road will act as a fuels break and slow fire progression. “We hope this will reduce potential fire intensity should we have one in that area,” said Kasey Hill, Fire Ecologist for the CFO.

Excess material from the thinning project was moved to the edge of the road for the public to collect as firewood. “There is a lot of material left over for individuals to use as firewood,” says Hill, “and we welcome members of the public to take as much as they want so long as they have a valid wood permit.” The lumber is easily accessible and available on a first come first served basis.

Firewood permits are available from the Challis Forest Service Office located at 311 N. US Highway 93 in Challis, Idaho. You must have a valid permit to cut and/or remove wood from public lands. Firewood cutting areas are designated and a map of the available pre-cut firewood is available from the BLM Challis Field Office located at 1151 Blue Mountain Road. Please remember—SAFETY FIRST! Information such as prices and designated cutting areas may be obtained by calling the Challis Field Office at 208-879-6200.
