WINNEMUCCA, NV - On Saturday, September 22, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Bureau of Land Management, Winnemucca District, Humboldt River Field Office, will host a National Public Lands Day at the Water Canyon Recreation Area in Winnemucca, Nevada. The BLM manages public lands for the benefit of current and future generations, supporting conservation as we pursue our multiple-use mission through community collaboration of our local partners. National Public Land’s Day partners include: Nevada Outdoor School, Bikes & More, Nevada Monarch Society, and Lowry High School Art Club.

This is a family friendly event with activities and service projects for volunteers of all ages. Volunteers can choose from rehabilitating the Bloody Shins Mountain Bike Trail System through trail clearing and installing new trail markers, or doing projects in Water Canyon such as eradicating graffiti, installing bat boxes, painting picnic tables, rehabilitating the sled hill, installing disc golf baskets at Water Canyon’s new disc golf course, or planting seeds and plants at the new pollinator garden and repairing the fence that borders the garden. National Public Lands Day will also host environmental education activities by the Nevada Outdoor School and at 12:30 p.m. will host a special speaker, Julie Koop, from the Nevada Monarch Society.

BLM will hand out commemorative BLM-NPLD t-shirts and coupons good for free admission to any National Park, or federal site that charges an entrance fee. Each participant will receive lunch following the conclusion of service projects. Participants are advised to wear layered clothing that can stand a little paint on or dirt, a hat, and boots or high-top sneakers. Volunteers are advised to bring plenty of water. Inclement weather may affect event status. The event will end with an appreciation lunch at 1:00 p.m.

National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands and brings together hundreds of thousands of individual and organizational volunteers focusing on the restoration and resilience of our public lands!

The event meeting location is at Water Canyon Recreation Area at campsite #4 or the first bathroom. Volunteers can sign up in advance as an individual or group, by contacting the

Outdoor Recreation Planner, Gabrielle Lukins at (775)623-1704. Additional information about National Public Lands Day is available at https://neefusa.org/public-lands-day
