GUNNISON, Colo. -- The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Gunnison Field Office is seeking public comment on nine Special Recreation Permit applications.

Special Recreation Permits are issued to recreation businesses to allow the use of specific BLM public lands. These permits provide the public use of a guided service for recreation activities, implement recreation management decisions, and ensure a fair return to the public for commercial use of public lands. In 2018, recreation on land managed by the BLM in Colorado generated $618 million and supported more than 5,000 jobs.

The new Special Recreation Permit applicants are:

  • Switzerland of America (Robert Ross) – Guided Jeep Tours on a road network in the Alpine Triangle Special Recreation Management Area.
  • San Juan Scenic Jeep Tours (Gregg Pieper) – Guided Jeep Tours on a road network in the Alpine Triangle Special Recreation Management Area.
  • Rocky Mountain National Rendezvous (Michael Briscoe) – Annual pre-1840 American western frontier re-enactment on private lands in Saguache County. The permit is to accommodate additional camping and re-enactment events.
  • Lake City Alpine 50 (John Coy) – Competitive mountain bike race on a road network in the Alpine Triangle Special Recreation Management Area. This event is planned for August 24, 2019.
  • Great Divide Overland Tour; New Mexico Backroads (Jake Quinones) – Long distance jeep tour passing through the Alpine Loop on July 29, 2019.
  • Mineral Mountain Guide and Outfitters (Greg Roy) – Permit transfer. Guided big game hunts, drop camp services, and horseback trail rides.
  • Gunnison Country Outfitters (Nicholas Ray) – Guided day use big game hunting.
  • Dog Daze Outfitters (Jacob Jones) – Tent camping unit delivery and setup service at Hartman Rocks Special Recreation Management Area.
  • Good Life Girls (McKinley Lenker) – Guided rock climbing and mountain biking at Hartman Rocks Special Recreation Management Area.

The BLM is soliciting comments on resource concerns, compliance history, health and safety, conflicts, and diversity of services. These comments will help the BLM determine whether the proposed Special Recreation Permits support the BLM’s objectives in recreation management and resource protection.

Details about the nine Special Recreation Permit applications are available for review in the BLM Gunnison Field Office located at 210A West Spencer Avenue in Gunnison. The BLM requires Special Recreation Permits for commercial activities as well as for competitive and organized group activities or events on BLM public lands.

Written comments can be submitted by email or mail.  Please describe your concerns or how you may be affected by the proposal. Comments are most helpful if received by July 9, 2019.
