In advance of National Trails Day this Saturday, June 2, 2012, as well as National Get Outdoors and Free Fishing day next Saturday, June 9, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Oregon and Washington has organized special events and waived many recreation fees. Contact the sponsoring BLM Districts for additional details. A list of the events and special deals are as follows: National Trails Day Burns District: American Competitive Trail Horse Competition (ride) this Saturday, June 2, in conjunction with a wild horse adoption event. Vale District: The 2nd Annual Run to the Ruts at the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Baker City June 2. Get exercise, inspired, and informed with a hike on more than four miles of trails filled with picturesque views of the Blue Mountains, the original Oregon Trail ruts and sweeping vistas of valleys and mountains in all directions. Most of the trails are paved and accessible to visitors of all abilities to enjoy the views, interpretive signage, wildlife, and plants. Trail Map available at: blm.gov/or/oregontrail/files/nhotic_site_map.pdf Free Fishing Day Burns District: Harney County's Annual Free Fishing Day is Saturday, June 16, in partnership with the State of Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Vale District: The 2012 Kids Free Fishing Day Derby for youth ages 14 and younger. On Saturday, June 9, from 9:00 a.m. until noon at the Highway 203 Pond. National Get Outdoors Day Burns District: Waiving overnight camping fees for Saturday, June 9. Prineville District: Waiving overnight camping fees on the Crooked River on June 9. Spokane District: Both daily use fees and overnight use fees will be waived June 9 for Yakima River Canyon sites.
