MONTROSE, Colo. –Over the past five years, volunteers joined BLM staff to complete a motorized and non-motorized trail system within Burn Canyon.  The BLM is hosting a recognition ceremony and tour of the newly constructed hiking and equestrian trails on Bureau of Land Management lands near Norwood, Colorado on Friday, April 29.

Partners from West End Bike Alliance, Norwood Parks and Recreation District, Town of Norwood, Norwood Chamber of Commerce, San Miguel County, Southwest Colorado Youth Corps and Colorado State Parks worked to make these new trails a reality.

“We have worked with our partners to create a fun, sustainable trail system for both our visitors and local community to enjoy,” said Sara Dawson, BLM Acting Uncompahgre Field Manager.  “We’re excited to have the public join us for a guided tour of the trails that were constructed last summer.”

This year, Norwood Parks and Recreation District received a grant through Colorado Parks and Wildlife to continue with trail construction. Additionally, Colorado Mountain Club will continue implementing the travel plan through a grant from the Telluride Foundation. The Southwest Conservation Corps will also be onsite with support from funds provided San Miguel County.

The tour will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Lunch will be provided by Norwood Parks and Recreation and all participants will have an opportunity to walk the new trails. For more details and to RSVP, interested participants should contact Robin Lewis, BLM Visitor and Volunteer Coordinator, at 970-240-5300 or rlewis@blml.gov by Friday, Apr. 22.
