DOLORES, Colo. – The Bureau of Land Management Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum, located at 27501 Highway 184 in Dolores, Colo., will be closed from February 19 through early to mid-May for major floor stabilization work. The project is aimed at preventing further settling of the 35-year-old structure and increasing the floor’s durability and ease of maintenance. Work was originally scheduled to begin in January but was delayed due to supply chain issues.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience while we undertake these much-needed repairs,” said Ray O’Neil, Monument Manager for Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. “Although our Visitor Center and Museum will be closed during the work, the rest of the Monument will remain open for the public to explore and experience the vast cultural history preserved here.”
The BLM plans to staff an information table outside the Museum during periods of good weather. The parking area, the Dominguez Pueblo, and a half-mile accessible interpretive trail leading to the extensive Escalante Pueblo and the McPhee Reservoir Overlook will remain open: https://www.blm.gov/sites/blm.gov/files/blm_co_canm_escalantedominguezpueblo_trailguide.pdf
Visitor information and restrooms are also available from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Dolores Public Lands Office, 29211 Hwy 184, Dolores, Colo. and daily at the Colorado Welcome Center, 928 E. Main St., Cortez, Colo.
