Exhibition at state fair featuring smokey the bear with a shovel

The 2023 California State Fair in Sacramento opened on Friday July 14th. Every year through a coordinated interagency collaboration the U.S. Forest ServiceCAL FIRE, U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Firefighters Burn Institute brings visitors of all ages a fun, educational and interactive fire safety and prevention exhibit called Camp Smokey.

Visitors to Camp Smokey are invited to pick up a passport for their journey at the Incident Command Post. Participants will learn about home and wildland fire safety, fire prevention, responsible recreation, the history of Smokey Bear, traditional Native American uses of fire and fire’s role in nature. Completion of six unique education stations earns visitors a free limited edition Smokey Bear bandana. Smokey Bear and his friends perform a fun and educational puppet show at the top of each hour. The puppet show includes fire safety topics covered at each of the six stations within Camp Smokey. New to Camp Smokey this year, guests will receive a limited-edition item at the completion of each station!

Guests will have the opportunity to tour fire trucks, play games, win prizes, saw logs to brand and keep, dress up like a firefighter, learn from expert fire safety personnel and so much more! Camp Smokey is open every day of the State Fair Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The California State Fair runs from July 14th through July 30th.

On Thursday July 27th, at 2:15 p.m., Camp Smokey’s interagency team will be presenting a new wildland firefighter memorial to the exhibit. An official ceremony will take place at the Incident Command post. This memorial was designed in remembrance of all wildland firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice and will be a place where everyone can come to pay respects to fallen firefighters across this great nation.
