LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Starting the week of March 12, the Bureau of Land Management will begin work to repair and improve the 1.5-mile unpaved road to the Picacho Peak Recreation Area. While public access to the site may be restricted at times, the BLM plans to provide access throughout most of the project, which may take up to six weeks to complete.
During the first week, the BLM will stage the equipment and materials in the recreation area’s parking lot. Once the staging is complete, the BLM will start the work, moving from west to east. Throughout the project, BLM staff will post signs to notify the public of the ongoing work and will advise people to proceed with caution.
The recreation area is northwest of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Due to high use and seasonal flooding, the BLM performs periodic maintenance on the 1.5-mile, unpaved road.
A popular local destination, the recreation area has more than 15 miles of mountain biking, hiking and equestrian trails. A 1.5-mile trail to Picacho Peak offers spectacular views of the Mesilla Valley and the Organ Mountains.
For additional information about the road project and schedule, please contact the BLM Las Cruces District at 575-525-4300 or stop by the office located at 1800 Marquess Street in Las Cruces.
