Albuquerque, N.M. - The Bureau of Land Management today announced the release of its Record of Decision and Approved Rio Puerco Field Office Resource Management Plan (RMP), updating the 1986 Rio Puerco RMP and its 1992 amendment. The planning area spans portions of Bernalillo, Cibola, McKinley, Torrance, Sandoval, and Valencia counties in central and west-central New Mexico.
“This approved resource management plan and record of decision will guide management of these public lands for the benefit of current and future generations as part of BLM’s multiple-use mission,” said BLM Rio Puerco Field Manager Adam Lujan.
The BLM’s Approved RMP finalizes the BLM’s Proposed RMP with some modifications, including an acknowledgement of the ancestral lands of all affiliated Tribal Nations within the planning area and an emphasis on management direction for cultural consultation and continual coordination with Tribal Nations.
The Rio Puerco planning area encompasses approximately 731,600 acres of BLM-managed land and 3.6 million acres of federal mineral estate within the decision area. The newly published record of decision and approved resource management plan updates management for recreation, conservation and wilderness, livestock grazing, transportation access, renewable energy, visual resources, wildland/urban interface, and mineral resources.
The Record of Decision, Approved Resource Management Plan, and other relevant documents can be found at BLM’s National NEPA Register.
