CANON CITY, Colo. – The Bureau of Land Management’s Royal Gorge Field Office will temporarily close the Ruby Mountain parking area at Browns Canyon National Monument April 1-30, 2017, for repairs and improvements. Flash floods in 2015 caused substantial damage to the parking area.

“We apologize for the temporary inconvenience and ask the public to plan their travel to the area accordingly,” said Keith Berger, Royal Gorge Field Manager. “When construction is complete, the new parking area will accommodate more visitors to Browns Canyon National Monument and the Fourmile trails. More importantly, it will be safer.”

The new parking area will have 18 parking spaces, two Americans with Disabilities Act spaces, four spaces for vehicles with trailers, and an improved drainage system.

During construction, there will be no access from BLM Forest Service Road 300 to the parking area. Chaffee County Road 300 will remain open to Ruby Campground. In 2015, recreation activities on BLM-managed lands generated $543 million and supported 4,625 jobs in Colorado.
