BLM Taos Field Office plans prescribed burns near Tres Piedras and Cerro

TAOS, N.M. – Beginning Sept. 9, and continuing for approximately one month, the Bureau of Land Management plans to conduct prescribed burns in two locations: the Río Grande del Norte National Monument on the east side of Cerro Montoso, 12 miles northeast of Tres Piedras, New Mexico; and in the Guadalupe Mountains, one mile south of Cerro, New Mexico. Smoke may be visible from highways NM 522, US 285 and US 64.
The burn in the Guadalupe Mountains is approximately 180 acres and the burn in Cerro Montoso is approximately 500 acres. The purpose of the projects is to improve forest health in ponderosa pine and piñon/juniper woodlands by reducing flammable accumulations of vegetation and reintroducing fire to a fire-dependent ecosystem.
