CARSON CITY, Nev. – With colder weather approaching, individuals are beginning to think about gathering firewood. Firewood cutting permits are required to gather firewood from BLM managed public lands. Permits for cutting firewood within the Carson City District, which includes Storey, Carson City, Lyon, Douglas, and Mineral Counties, as well as portions of Washoe, Churchill and Nye Counties, are available at the BLM Carson City District Office and two additional locations.
Firewood cutting permits, are for personal use only. Personal firewood can be collected as dead, standing or down wood, and of Pinyon Pine and/or Utah Juniper tree species. The cost of a firewood permit is $8 per cord, with an additional $2 per cord as a road maintenance fee, thus $10 total per cord. Permits are valid for 90 days from the date of purchase when one to two cords are purchased. When three cords or more are purchased, permits are valid for 180 days from the date of purchase. Permits for no more than five cords of wood can be purchased at one time, with an annual limit of ten cords.
A commercial firewood permit is required for individuals who want more than ten cords and want to cut wood for resale or commercial use. Maps of authorized firewood cutting areas and stipulations governing the permits are provided when purchasing permits.
While out cutting firewood, remember to be in possession of your permit and map. Follow all permit stipulations and use caution to prevent wild fires. During dry weather, wood cutters should have a fire extinguisher, shovel and bucket of water handy. In addition, all chainsaws must be equipped with spark arrestors. Please stay on existing roads and review your map to make sure you are on BLM managed lands. Report any permit violations with as much information as possible (e.g. date, license plate number, detailed location, and directions to area) to the Carson City District Office.
BLM permits for firewood will be sold at the locations listed below. All locations will accept cash or check and in addition, the BLM Carson City District Office can process credit card orders in person or over the phone.
