PORTLAND, OR — Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Oregon/Washington State Director Jerome Perez announced today his selection of Ms. Abbie Jossie as the new District Manager of the BLM Roseburg District in southwestern Oregon.

"Abbie has outstanding qualifications and will be a great asset to the BLM Roseburg District," said Perez. "She appreciates Oregon's unique and outstanding public lands and resources, and is committed to working cooperatively for their benefit with local communities, partners, and stakeholders."

Ms. Jossie will begin March 12, 2013. She replaces Katrina Symons who recently transferred to the BLM California Field Office in Barstow. Don Holmstrom will continue as the Acting District Manager until Abbie's report date. Enthusiastic of her new appointment, Abbie says, "I am honored and excited to be able to work with the talented staff of the Roseburg District, and I look forward to working collaboratively with our community, partners, and the public as we face the challenges and opportunities unique to western Oregon." The District Manager serves as the line manager and advises the State Director on natural resource policies and programs relative to the District.

Ms. Jossie has been with the BLM for 25 years, and is currently the acting Deputy State Director for Resources for BLM Alaska. She has been the Assistant District Manager for Lands and Resources in the Medford District for the past two years, and was the Field Manager for the Grants Pass Field Office for ten years prior to that position. She has worked in several field offices in Wyoming, Idaho and Nevada. Ms. Jossie began her career in leadership positions in 1992, holding positions as a Supervisory Rangeland Specialist, District Program Lead, and Assistant Field Manager prior to her arrival in Oregon in 2000. She has a degree in Wildlife Management from the University of Nevada at Reno. She and her husband Don have two children. Sam is 22 and attends the University of Oregon, and Lizzie is 18 and a freshman at the University of Idaho.

Public lands of the Roseburg District contain over 420,000 acres including some of the most productive forests of dense stands of Douglas-fir, hemlock, and cedar. The district is crisscrossed with streams and rivers that support sport fishing and contribute to anadromous fish stocks vital to commercial fishing. An important mainstay of the local economy is the wood products industry, which acquires timber from both private and Federal lands in the region. With Interstate 5 running through the middle of the district, and east-west state highways connecting Crater Lake to the Pacific coast, the Roseburg District draws many tourists to its scenic and recreation attractions.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska, on behalf of the American people. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. Our mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of America’s public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
